Primary Options for Acute Care is a service allowing doctors to access investigations, care, or treatment for their patient, as an alternative to an acute hospital admission.
This is a solution offered by Primary Care to assist in managing the acute demand for hospital beds in the Auckland, Counties Manukau and Waitemata District Health Board regions.
A range of community diagnostic, therapeutic and logistic services are provided at no cost (except the initial GP consultation) to the patient. These include:

A range of community diagnostic, therapeutic and logistic services are provided at no cost (except the initial GP consultation) to the patient. These include:
- Diagnostic procedures e.g. X-Ray, Ultrasound, ECG, urgent bloods
- Extended services within the GP’s Surgery
- GP or Nurse Home Visits
- After hours referral to Accident and Medical Centre
- Home Nursing, Home Help, Meals on Wheels and Equipment Hire
- Intravenous therapy
- Transport to and from Primary Care locations
- Rest Home or Private Hospital Care
primary options for mental health (cmdhb only)
CMDHB is interested in improving support services for primary mental health services in Counties Manukau. As part of the primary mental health work programme CMDHB has funded a pilot programme to provide short term practical supports for people who are receiving treatment from a general practice team for a Mental Health problem of moderately severe intensity.
This service is available to patients who are being actively treated for a moderately severe mental health condition and will provide practical supports to assist in recovery.

To be eligible for services, the following criteria will apply:
- The patient must be aged 18-64 years
- The patient must live in the Counties Manukau DHB catchment area and be currently enrolled with a Counties Manukau PHO
- The patient must be receiving active treatment and support from their General Practice team for a moderately severe mental health condition
- The patient must not be able to access any other funding source for these practical supports
